Northumberland is rich in unspoilt beauty and Thropton's central location within the County makes it an ideal base from which to explore.

There are more castles in Northumberland than any other English county. Dramatic ruins point to the region's centuries-old battles with marauding Scots. Magnificent Bamburgh, Chillingham and Alnwick Castles are filled with treasures and very much living history. Alnwick Castle, home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and its now world-famous Garden are just 12 miles away.

Only 2 miles from Thropton is Cragside. Built by the great Victorian industrialist and inventor, the 1st Lord Armstrong, this 1,000 acre estate has 40 miles of woodland walks, lakes, picnic areas and was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.

The Northumberland National Park has over 600 sq miles of spectacular coastline, forests, unspoilt moorland, river valleys and rugged landscapes which are revisited time and again by walkers, artists and outdoor enthusiasts. The local rivers offer some of the best fishing in England, the County's historic towns and villages provide visitors with many magical memories and the people of Northumberland's warmth and hospitality are famous throughout the world.
